North Funen
Bogense is the biggest town on North Funen and it has so many tiny, charming, colourful houses and half-timbered buildings.
I stayed at Bogense Hotel on a half-board stay. The food was really delicious and the restaurant was full for lunch and dinner, every day.
For some reason, Bogense has a replica of Manneken Pis, the icon from Brussels of the little peeing boy. I have seen the original in Brussels also.
Just outside Bogense is Harridslevgaard Castle, where pirates used to roam in medieval times. Back then the ocean was at the foot of the castle and the pirates put lights on the walls to make the castle look like a light house. Meaning they could attract ships and then plunder them quickly. On the lawn in front of the castle, the most beautiful peacock followed me around but I wasn’t brave enough to get up close with it.
Ditlevsdal Bison Farm
The biggest bison farm in Europe, is found on North Funen. The farm was founded in 1993 and has over 400 American bison today.
There is also a farm shop and a restaurant, selling bison products. I tasted the “Native American Pot” and it was so delicious.
You can rent a prairie cabin and wake up to bison grassing outside the window. There’s a barbeque at every hut, so you can buy meat in the farm shop and prepare it yourself.
Ditlevsdal Bison Farm also offers guided tours in prairie wagons with a stop on the prairie in the middle of the grassing bison pack. I was on a guided tour in October, and it was a little chilly. Nonetheless, it was very interesting and I will absolutely recommend a visit here.
