Berlin
The city offers up so much history and I love being in Berlin. There’s always something new to do.
One of my best memories is a visit to the Dunkel Restaurant, where you dine in the dark and the waiters are blind. You choose a menu and decide the meat of the main course before being seated in the dark. I do not recommend soup as a starter, as it is impossible not to make a mess.
Olympiastadion is home to Hertha Berlin, and I was fortunate enough to see a match. The stadium can hold 75.000 people and is also used for concerts and athletics events. If you go to a match, consider taking the S-Bahn, as parking is sparse if you don’t know the area well.
Shopping at Kurfürstendamm (Ku’damm among locals) and KaDeWe (Kaufhaus des Westens) is a must.
The former East Berlin
Alexander Platz, where trams are still roaming the streets, is the heart of former East Berlin. Here you’ll discover the Weltzeit Uhr, a world clock, showing the people of GDR the time in exotic locations. They were not allowed to leave the GDR, but that was a minor detail.
The TV Tower is also on Alexander Platz, and it has a restaurant inside the dome, which rotates. 1 lap takes 1 hour to complete, offering a 360degree view of Berlin. It is so incredible, and the food is good.
East Berlin is, in my opinion, synonymous with the “Trabi”. The tiny car, which was produced in the GDR from 1957-1990. If you want to drive one yourself, head to the Trabi Safari and museum for a guided tour.
East Side Gallery is a piece of the Berlin Wall in its original construction.
